It involves something when even the Capitalist mass media spend greater than a week with headlines attacking the Liberal-Tory Government. But, that is what we have seen. It is an indication of a feature of the Liberal-Tories I’ve pointed out before – their seeming sheer incompetence, and political ineptness. Over the last few weeks, we have acquired “Horsegate”, “Dinnergate”, “Grannygate”, and now “Jerrygate”, and “Pastygate”! Obviously, that comes on the surface of the association with various people appealing to the Police in their investigations over “Hackgate”.
Then there have been the travails of the Liberals, which triggered David Laws and regulations to step within times of taking office down. All Government eventually pile up lots of calamities, over the full years, but this Government from Day One has piled them up. No wonder, even Chris Huhne’s supporters called the Deputy Prime Minister, “Calamity Clegg”. The Liberal-Tory incompetence started before they were elected even.
The Liberals had gone into the election posting Labor’s position that any attempt to withdraw the fiscal stimulus, prior to the recovery acquired using keep, would be folly. Obviously, less than a yr earlier, David Cameron and the Tories had were saying the same thing, appealing to outspend Labor even, on a variety of services!
But, the Republicans, in the US, had undermined the position of the Democrats, in Congress, by attacking the type of fiscal stimulus policies that they had been carrying out, under Bush, and that Obama was continuing. The Tories, like good opportunist politicians, saw the probability to accomplish the same technique.

They empty their prior position and adopted a position like the “Tea Party Taliban”, in America. Both appealed to a right-wing populist constituency that forms the core of Conservative support. So, they came out with claims which equated Britain with bankrupt Greece ridiculously. The Liberals, prior to the election, opposed this nonsense, and according for an interview David Laws gave to Sky News, through the Coalition negotiations even, the Liberals held to that position. He discussed the pressing issue of the deficit being “hyped up”. The UK was not Greece clearly. The country was not going to go bankrupt, or anything like it. There have been no extravagant Labor spending.
In fact, the common percentage deficit under Blair and Brown was lower than under Thatcher and Major significantly. Interest rates weren’t particularly high. There was no chance that Bond Markets would stop lending to Britain. Interest rates have not dropped because of the austerity measures, but because the Bank of England has printed vast amounts of pounds and used it to buy UK Gilts! The same process has triggered the pound to fall, and inflation to soar. It has also caused “Financial Repression”, quite simply, pensioners and other savers find that the eye they obtain is significantly below inflation, leading to them to reduce money. There obviously was an alternative.
= $ the economy has been triggered by =p>The austerity, worsening the Government’s financial position, and the ability to repay the debt. THE UNITED STATES, which continued to use methods of fiscal stimulus, has continued to recover, with unemployment significantly beginning to fall. The narrative adopted by the Liberal-Tories may have been convenient politically, but right from the start it shot them in the foot. See: Victims Of Their Own Incompetence. Once locked into this narrative, they were struggling to escape it without causing an emergency of self-confidence, and undermining their only response to episodes by Labor. But, it was that narrative that forced the Liberals to simply accept the increase in Tuition Fees, for example.
They cannot openly change course significantly, because that would be political suicide. But, of course, they have already changed course. That’s illustrated by the fact that only around 6% of the austerity program has up to now been introduced. But, that again showed the incompetence of the Liberal-Tories. The first programs to get hit were Capital projects which were very important to the business. The “Building Schools FOR FUTURE YEARS” program was the first, which hit not just construction companies and their suppliers, however the IT companies who would be providing the technology for those universities. It was no surprise that the announcement of this, by Michael Gove, was itself a catalog of errors.
The Liberal-Tories were undertaking this program, whilst at the same time attacking the State bureaucrats they needed to support them in the program! See: A Bit Of A Pickle. The Liberal-Tories have appealed to a right-wing populist constituency, which makes up the primary of their membership and voter base.
That is more true of the Tories than the Liberals. The Liberals also have that foundation, but in days gone by, they were able also, when you are two-faced, to appeal in elements of the national country, to a new constituency, the petit-bourgeois intellectuals, the Guardianistas. In order to get their practical the Ministerial limos, they have been ready to ditch that foundation, and throw in their lot with the Tories.
